Has Felix finally found his home?
Joao Felix had another dazzling display for his new team Barcelona last night in their Champions League opener against Belgian side Royal Antwerp, scoring two goals and providing a delicate assist to allow Robert Lewandowski to score his 100th Champions League goal. It capped off a second man of the match performance in just 3 Barcelona appearances, having played like a new man in his home debut against last weekend against Real Betis. This begs the question, has Joao Felix finally found the club he has looked for since leaving Benfica for Atletico Madrid back in 2019? The striker has struggled to live up to the heights and the hype that surrounded him during his breakout season for Benfica in the 2018/19 season, with many saying that the rigid system that Diego Simeone plays at Atletico Madrid simply doesn’t suit Felix, and that he is a player who needs to roam free around the pitch and that he needs to be on the team who spends most of the game with the ball and not off it. His spell in England last season with Chelsea showed football fans around the world that the talent was still there, but ultimately Chelsea was not the club for him to display this talent as there was £323 million worth of players also trying to fit into a new team and a new manager who had never managed a club the stature of Chelsea before. Ultimately his time at chelsea will be best known for playing well on his debut away to Fulham but getting a red card in the same game. However this time around at Barcelona, it seems as though Xavi has managed to create a team that plays to Felix’s strengths, which are to keep the ball and play fluid football. The match last night against Royal Antwerp was a masterful display from midfield from Barcelons, with Frankie De Jong and Ilkay Gundogan elegantly pulling the strings in the middle of the park and youngster Gavi doing the nitty gritty that also needs to be done in the midfield. There is still a very long season to be played but there is no doubt that at this moment in time Joao Felix is loving life at Barcelona and is slowly rediscovering the form that led people to believe that he could one day lift a Balon d’or.
